お年玉って英語でなんて言う？日本のお正月を英語で説明しよう！

さてさて、もうクリスマスも終わり、次のイベントはお正月ですね！
昨年もお正月英語を紹介しましたが、今年もやっていきますよ〜

お正月飾り

お正月飾り、とひとくくりにしていうのであれば、”New year’s decorations“と言えますね！

お正月飾りの説明

There are various kinds of Japanese traditional New year’s decorations. One of which, Kagami-mochi is a decoration that is offered to the deities. Two round mochis are put on top of one another. Its name and shape come from the bronze mirrors that were used in ancient rituals in Japan. There is also Shimekazari, which is made of thick straw ropes called shimenawa, as well as other ornaments. The place where Shimekazari are hung represents a purified space and it also plays a role as a charm to make the evil spirits away.

おせち料理

おせち料理も日本特有のものなので、英語でいうとすれば、”Japanese New Year’s food”になりますかね！

おせち料理の説明

There are many kinds of traditional Japanese New Year’s food. They are called Osechi-ryori and each dish has its own meanings. For example, kuromame’s color black is thought to have the power to keep the evil spirits away. Another food that is often eaten are shrimps. As they have a long beard and their shape is curved, it is said to represent longevity and people eat them in hopes of a long prosperous life.

お餅

お餅は英語に翻訳すると、”rice cake“と言いますが、最近では”mochi“としても浸透してきています！

お餅の紹介

Mochi is often eaten in Japan during the New Years’ celebration. It has been used and eaten in celebrations and rituals since ancient times in Japan. You can have them in different forms and tastes. For example, Ozoni, which means “cooking ingredients together” is a Japanese soup that includes mochi, vegetables, meat, and fish. The ingredients and flavor can differ depending on the household as well as the region.

お年玉

お年玉は、日本特有の文化でなので英語では該当する単語はないのですが、訳すと”New Year’s gift“と言えますかね！

お年玉の紹介

Every year for the new year’s holidays, Japanese children get money as a new year’s gift from adults around them. It is called Otoshidama in Japanese and it is a tradition here. The amount of money depends on the household and the children’s age, but it is an event that many look forward to.
